ادى النمو السريع للتصنيع في الصين على مدى الأربعين عاماً الماضية أو نحو ذلك إلى المزيد من التلوث البيئي واثارة المخاوف بشأن زيادة النفايات واستنزاف الموارد ونظراً لتفاقم التحديات البيئية والاخذة بالتصاعد مع التوسع في النشاط الاقتصادي للصين لاسيما القطاع الصناعي ،فان المتتبع للبصمة البيئية للصين يجد انها في اتساع مستمر، وكنتيجة لذلك وتحت ضغط التلوث البيئي واستنزاف الموارد الطبيعية، والسعي وراء حياة عالية الجودة لمواطنيها ، عـدلت الصين سياساتها البيئية للسماح بالانتقال من الاقتصاد الخطي وهو اقتصاد التبذير والتلوث وكثيف الانبعاثات الى اقتصاد دائري صديق للبيئة، من خلال تحسين كفاءة استخدام الموارد وتقليل التلوث والانبعاثات والاستفادة القصوى من دورة حياة المادة ، وعليه سنحاول رصد عملية الانتقال هذه وتحديد القطاعات المستهدفة ومدى تأثرها بعملية التحول من حيث استدامة الموارد وكفاءة استخدامها.
